Lore and Cards (vars and Functions)Workbook v1

Lore & Cards Creation Guide

Your cards are gateways between story and code. Use them to create objects, items, characters, and concepts that can later be placed into function machines (like the Inferno Forge).

đź›  What You Can Make

  • Objects → swords, flasks, scrolls, armor, keys
  • Items → potions, runes, tools, treasures
  • Characters → heroes, monsters, allies, familiars
  • Concepts → fire, wind, shadow, machines, magic systems

How They Work in Class

  1. Draw or describe your idea on a card.
  2. Name it (banner at the top).
  3. Give it details (type, value, effect) in the text box.
  4. Use it in a function machine (like the Inferno Forge):
    • Place two cards as inputs.
    • “Activate” with a dialogue or catchphrase (string).
    • Create a new output card as the result!

Creative Prompts

  • What happens if you combine a weapon + magic rune?
  • What if your character discovers an object + item?
  • Could a concept + object create a tool for your quest?
  • Can a silly or impossible card still teach you something in code?

The Function Machine (Cut & Build)

Your Function Machine is a physical model you will print, cut out, and fold together. Think of it like the Inferno Forge in your story — a place where inputs go in, and a new output comes out!

đź›  Steps to Build

  1. Print the dieline template on sturdy paper (cardstock recommended).
  2. Cut along the solid lines carefully.
  3. Fold along the dashed lines to shape the box or machine.
  4. Glue or tape the edges together to make it sturdy.
  5. Decorate your Function Machine! Add fire, gears, runes, or whatever matches your story.

🔄 How It Works in Class

  1. Choose two input cards (e.g., Iron Ore + Fire Rune).
  2. Place them into the input slot of your Function Machine.
  3. Speak your Dialogue Card / Catchphrase to activate it.
  4. Create a new output card that represents the result (e.g., Molten Blade).

🎨 Tips

  • You can make more than one machine (Potion Mixer, Rune Carver, Summoning Altar).
  • Each team’s machine can look different — be creative!
  • Your code in C# will mirror this process: inputs → function → return value.
